2010 Diliman Month

This year’s UP Diliman Month celebration commences February 1 with the College of Music’s UGNAYAN: Conference and Performances running up to February 3 and the college’s 94th Anniversary Chamber Music Festival, marked by musical performances on February 9, 16, 17, 18, and 25 every 6:00 pm, at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium. The first week, which is a music-filled week, is capped with a special jazz-dance concert, featuring the UP Jazz Ensemble and the UP Dance Company, titled Sing! Dance! Sing! on February 5, 6:30 pm at the University Theater.

All activities are open to the public but control tickets for the Sing! Dance! Sing! Jazz-Dance Concert are available at the OICA office, 2nd level, University Theater. read more>>>

Call for nominations for Gawad Chanselor

 Nominations are now open for the 2010 Gawad Chanselor, UPD’s highest distinction for excellence and achievement.
Awards for four categories are up this year, namely Natatanging Guro, Natatanging REPS, Natatanging Kawani and Natatanging Estudyante.
The Gawad Chanselor will be awarded 26 February, a most appropriate finale to the UP Diliman Month in February.

TOWARDS A DISASTER-PREPARED NATION

 The damage caused by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng this year shows the inability of government to effectively respond to natural hazards. Since these can claim thousands of lives based on past experience, preparations should be set in place to make communities less vulnerable.

 The University Council of the University of the Philippines Diliman condemns the brutal murder of more than 57 men and women in Maguindanao by members of government security and paramilitary forces apparently acting in behalf of a local warlord. While the killing of more than 31 journalists last November 23 is unprecedented in Philippine and all of human history, the killing of 26 other persons is itself unparalleled in the history of Philippine politics.

  The mutilated bodies of journalists Ian Subang (Dadiangas Times), Leah Dalmacio (Forum), Gina dela Cruz (Today), Marites Cablitas (Today), Joy Duhay (UNTV), Henry Araneta (DZRH), Andy Teodoro (Mindanao Inquirer), Neneng Montaño (formerly of RGMA), Bong Reblando, (Manila Bulletin), Victor Nuñez (UNTV), Mark Gilbert Ariola (UNTV), Jimmy Cabillo (UNTV), Jolito Evardo (UNTV, still missing), Daniel Tiamson (UNTV), Eugene Dohillo (UNTV), Bart Maravilla (Bombo Radyo, Koronadal) and lawyers Cynthia Oquendo and Connie Brizuela were recovered hours after they had set out to cover the filing of certificates of candidacy by the wife of a local official in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao yesterday. Read more >>

New Asian Center building inaugurated

  It was a day of celebrating Asian culture last December 2 with the inauguration of the GT-Toyota Asian Cultural (ACC) Center, a gleaming P100-million complex donated by Toyota Motor Philippines, the single most significant gift to the University in the course of its Centennial year.
